Human Identification Services

Methods used for human identification vary widely among laboratories.  The methods used in our laboratory are the most accurate available.
Although the methods are expensive to perform, we make the technology available at a competitive price.

Our tests are frequently used most frequently for Paternity, but can be used for a variety of other purposes.  We provide results for paternity that are greater than 99.999% accurate when the Mother, Father and Child are tested.  Accuracy for unambiguous identification of any individual human is in the neighborhood of 1 in 4,000,000,000,000,000,000.  This estimate suggests that the accuracy is greater than all humans who have ever lived on this planet!  The only exception is identical twins, they would be indistinguishable by these tests.

Uses of DNA Identity Testing

Our Human Identification services include other uses.  We can perform a variety of kinship studies as well.  Relationship studies go beyond the identification of a particular individual.  These studies mathematically examine the probability of relatedness among different members in a family.

Why do these studies?  These studies can be used in cases of immigration (Petition for Alien Relative), mix up of newborns in a hospital setting, verification of relative status in estate settlements, verification of biological parentage in adoption cases, adoptee finding biological parents, genealogical studies among putative relatives, identical versus fraternal twins.

Private Testing

  • Home paternity and kinship tests may not be upheld in a court of law because we do not document an evidentiary chain-of-custody
for these tests, but the actual DNA tests are the same as those used for the legal testing (16 DNA marker systems) and are just as accurate as legally-valid tests.

  • We take your word for your identity, but you take responsibility for authority and guardianship for ordering DNA tests for yourself and any minors tested.

  • Because we do not "witness" sample collections or otherwise verify your identity, we cannot vouch that the samples came from a particular individual.  You are on the honor system for that.  Hence, there is no chain of custody.

  • You may self-collect DNA samples using our kits.  It is very easy to do and all materials and instructions are included.

  • These can be used to settle paternity questions among consenting parties.

  • Home testing is less expensive option if it suits your needs.

  • We either destroy the DNA samples after testing or return them to you at your request.

  • We provide telephone consultation with you about the results of the tests at no additional charge.

(NY always requires court order or prescription)

Legal Testing - What's the difference?

  • Legally-valid testing costs a bit more because of the additional time involved in documenting an evidentiary chain-of-custody from validation of the tested parties through reporting to authorized parties and the costs of the use of certain authorized couriers.

  • Legally-valid tests may alternatively require ordering by an attorney under informed consent of all parties.

    • Check with your attorney for any special requirements.

  • We document an evidentiary chain-of-custody from sample collection through result reporting.

  • Parties to be tested usually produce a prescription, court order or government document (such as a request from Immigration Services), if applicable, officially requesting the test or requested for use in child custody, adoption, divorce, estates, etc.

  • Legal testing may be requested without a prescription or court order as well, since we verify the identities of all parties.
We always recommend that you check with your attorney to be sure this conforms to their legal standard.

  • Parties must sign informed consent and authorization and indemnity forms (witnessed)

  • We have special collection requirements to ensure evidentiary conformance.

    • validation of identifying documents

    • two forms of identification, one with photo (driver's license, passport, military papers, birth certificate,
state-issued ID card, immigration ID card, etc.)

    • witnessed specimen collection

    • witnessed and signed photographs (2 passport photos) of persons tested

    • delivery of samples to our laboratory by authorized courier

  • Notarized results with attached signed photos will be reported to an authorized officer of the court or to the requesting physician,
if so designated, via authorized courier.

  • We maintain an electronic chain of custody in-house to track processing of the samples.

  • We retain the DNA samples on file as specified by law.

  • Call us to discuss your situation.

Individual Genotyping

HumID   We can provide individual genotypes for special cases or individual request.  These can be private or legal reports.
