Semen Detection Testing

Semen detection tests are used to visualize the presence of semen in stains on items, particularly personal items and articles of clothing.  Our preference is to use a reliable presumptive test that detects the high levels of an enzyme called acid phosphatase present in semen, even after a vasectomy.  PSA tests are another option, but we do not use them.  If the presence of semen is detected, the client may request additional testing to determine whether his or her DNA profile matches the DNA found in the stains or is excluded, meaning that the stain contains DNA from another individual.

We do not perform PSA tests nor are we a producer of acid phosphatase or PSA home kits.

  • Positive presumptive tests (acid phosphatase or PSA) for the presence of semen are a prerequisite for DNA profiling

  • Our lab rejects samples that are acid phosphatase negative or PSA negative (from home tests)

  • Samples from known vasectomized or sterile (aspermic) men must be considered with caution.  Our preference is to reject these samples.   Here is the reason.

Once semen is detected and a decision is made to proceed with DNA testing, profiles will be generated from the DNA in the stains.  At that time, a buccal (cheek) swab sample will be requested from the client to determine whether their DNA profile matches the DNA isolated from the stain.

Fees

The fees for Semen Detection include:

  1. Isolation of material contained in stains on clothing or other items (non-destructive)

  2. Detection of semen

The fees for DNA profiling include:

  1.  High quality forensic DNA isolation

  2.  The generation of DNA profiles (priced per profile)*

  3.  Complete report and explanation

  4.  Telephone support

* We may use either 16 marker STR or Y-STR analysis depending on the circumstances.  Please call to find out which is appropriate for your test.

Arranging for testing

  1. Please call the lab for shipping instructions at (888) 440-IDNA.

  2. The items to be tested should be stored in new, clean paper bags or paper envelopes.  Trapping moisture with the sample by using plastic bags can result in the degradation of the DNA contained in the samples. Do not use plastic bags to store the samples.

  3. Place in a box, padded envelope or Tyvek envelope to protect the items during shipping, depending on which is appropriate for the size and quantity of the item(s) in question.

  4. If sending using an overnight courier (FedEx, UPS, DHL , DO NOT specify a signature required).

  5. Download the forms below, fill them out and include your payment with the samples.  If you cannot download them, please call us and we can email, fax or mail them to you.

  6. If you prefer, you may include a money order or call us with your credit card number for payment of fees instead of ordering via the internet.

  7. Send to IDNA Systems, Inc. address at the bottom of this page and at the top of each form you will download.

We will keep you informed about the progress of the analysis of your specimens.

Presumptive semen detection will be completed within 48 hours of receipt of samples.

Please allow up to 7 business days for samples to be processed for DNA profiles.

Keep a copy for your records.

Semen Detection on personal items (per item)

Clothing or other items should be stored in new, clean paper bags or paper envelopes, never in plastic bags.  Drying does not interfere with the test.  Moisture destroys the sample over time.  The test is not destructive and items will be packaged and returned to you unless you give us other instructions.   Large items may require additional shipping fees.  Call for details.

$ 50 each

DNA profiles supporting positive semen detection (optional)

Additional optional testing would include generating DNA profiles.  The additional testing usually requires that at least 2 DNA profiles be produced.  Call for details.

$ 169 each
